The world is full of music that will never be heard.
That’s a sad fact that keeps me up at night.
I get emotional just thinking about it.
But instead of crying into my pillow like a helpless weakling, I decided to be proactive and do everything I could to right the wrongness.
In my case, “doing everything” means compiling a list of five cool songs and sharing it via email.
I’ve included a link to a Spotify playlist so all you need to do is click and listen.
I get to sleep better at night and you get a fresh batch of dopeness for your earholes.
That right there is what’s known as a WIN-WIN.
Enjoy the tunes and have a goddamn glorious weekend.
Love,
DJ Crankypete

“Fire in Cairo” - The Cure
A bouncy pop gem from the band’s 1979 debut album Three Imaginary Boys. If you like songs where the song title is spelled out, this is the track for you. Feels very contemporary even though it was released the same year as Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
“Fatso” - Warmduscher
Their name in German means “somebody who showers with warm water.” I prefer hot water myself, but the music of Warmduscher is soothing in its way. The band started as side project between members of the British bands Fat White Family and Paranoid London. Since then, they’ve released some infinitely catchy collaborations with artists like Iggy Pop and Kool Keith. “Fatso” mixes dancy grooves with Sly Stone choruses and gravelly, punk-talk vocals for an overall pleasant three and a half minutes.
“Coolin’ in Cali” - The 7A3
The 7A3 released one album in 1988. This is the title track. The members all hailed from New York but the group was based in Los Angeles, including DJ Muggs, who went on to bigger success with Cypress Hill. I’m always happy to find hip-hop of this era that I missed the first time around.
“Wrong Part of Town” - 79rs Gang
At first listen, I thought this was one of those tracks from a compilation of obscure African rock from the 70s. It turns out that this jam is brand new and from two Mardi Gras Indian Chiefs in New Orleans. The 79rs Gang is a collaboration between Big Chief Romeo Bougere of the 9th Ward Hunters and Big Chief Jermaine Bossier of the 7th Ward Creole Hunters. The idea is to take a couple of artists who might usually be rivals, mix traditional music styles with modern production and watch it blow up. Good stuff.
“You Can’t Hide” - Maktub
Goddamnit. I was listening to this thinking “that guy sounds like Reggie Watts.” Turns out it IS Reggie Watts. Maktub is the band he helped form in the 1990s while he was in college in Seattle. Very smooth, super funky and lots of “how have I never heard them before?” grooves and hooks.

That’s all for now.
See you next time.
